2012 Laser World Champs qualification and coaching

World Championships for Australian sailors have a key stepping stone to higher standards of sailing in Australia.  More profound effects for sailors include the way that they go and come back changed, more self assured, confident in the way they think and how they go about things, pride was strikingly evident with former worlds sailors at Nationals in Sydney this year, their performances were outstanding.

The 2012 4.7 Youth World Championship regatta is a chance to compete at the highest level, not necessarily win on race day, but win in all other respects.  Some sailors state that they are not quite ready, I say there is no better time, nothing will make you more ready than the event itself, think about it, you cannot lose.   2012 Laser 4.7 Youth World Champs in Buenes Aires Argentina 31 Mar – 7 April is the ultimate development event for 4.7 laser sailors.

Laser Standard Junior World Championship Regatta caters for for the larger youth sailor (larger than radial) and the post youth development period (under 21). 2012 Laser Standard Junior World Championship Regatta in Buenes Aires Argentina 8 – 15 April is a great event to extend competition to developing laser sailors under 21.

There is a complication with these two events being earlier in the year than usual ie expect International Laser Class Association (ILCA) to open registration in say November or December, before Australia has had its qualifying National events ……………. ie Australian sailors may not know whether they will qualify or not.  Not much can be done to remedy this except to monitor the ILCA web site and register early http://events.laserinternational.org/en/events/list/104z1.  The cost is relatively small and you can cancel any time, results at nationals will eventually act to prioritise the list in place …… if you wait and are serious about going, your allocated spot could be delayed or worse.

Travel cost to South America may be a concern for some, in my experience the airfare has been a little expensive but accommodation cheaper, along with cost of living, can be a cost effective event when compare with others, a lot of fun, an opportunity to learn some Spanish.

Laser Radial Youth World Championship Regatta at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron 28 Jun – 4 Jul 2012 will not have this problem. Being later in the year, Radials can expect registration to open in the new year.

To improve competitiveness of the national laser fleet and assist with costs, coaching for worlds events has been sponsored by YA and organised by ALCA.  ALCA will endeavour to assist with obtaining YA funding for coaching in 2012 worlds campaigns.

Sailing can be a part of the 2018 Commonwealth Games

you can help!

There is an opportunity for Sailing to be a part of the 2018 Commonwealth Games but first we have to promote ourselves.
The link below gives us the opportunity through the Gold Coast Media then on to the people who count in Government.
Please take the time to read the article, firstly you have the opportunity to vote for your sport,
second add your own comments as to why we should include sailing as part of our bid to the Commonwealth Games Committee.
